As we plan for our opposition campaign to the disastrous nomination of the Secretary of Education, I indicated that I would immediately send you several pieces of model language for your consideration. As I met with some of you and with our staff, I believe it would be better to hold off sending everything as a package just before the holidays. We’ll be asking you to take actions in a very coordinated and time-sensitive manner after the first of the year. I think it would be much better and more strategic to send the requested actions as we need you to move on them.
The actions will involve individual members; local and state affiliates; and reaching out to local community activists outside our Association.
There’s one thing we can do now. We ask you to act immediately and before the holidays to facilitate the individual action we need from members:
We are asking every member, non-members, parents, activists, anyone who cares about the essential right for every student to have access to a quality public education free from corporate privatization to sign our joint NEA-AFT open letter. Then we’re asking them to help it go viral and send to their own circle of friends.
This will do several things. It will alert our members far and wide to the threat that this nominee presents to public education. It will also be newsworthy if we gain traction and can go viral with hundreds of thousands or even millions of signatures. Further, it will allow us to keep these activists informed as their actions are needed in future urgent matters moving through the process.
After the holidays, expect more actions that your affiliate leaders and governance bodies can consider including taking affiliate positions that can be reported to your senators and outreach to our community allies.
For now, thank you for standing with us. Our voices will be heard with your help.
